According to Forbes, Ivan Pardo, a 26-year-old based in Los Angeles, is the main person behind the app, which can be downloaded on the iPhone or Android.

Consumers can “scan the barcode on any product and the free app will trace its ownership all the way to its top corporate parent company, including conglomerates like Koch Industries.” The app also allows users to “join user-created campaigns to boycott business practices that violate your principles rather than single companies.”

A keynote speaker at last year’s Netroots Nation gathering pitched a similar app. According to Forbes, Darcy Burner “figured the average supermarket shopper had no idea that buying Brawny paper towels, Angel Soft toilet paper or Dixie cups meant contributing cash to Koch Industries through its subsidiary Georgia-Pacific” or “purchasing a pair of yoga pants containing Lycra or a Stainmaster carpet meant indirectly handing the Kochs your money.”

A sea of black coats - the traditional attire of ultra-Orthodox men - engulfed Jerusalem streets near the city’s military draft bureau where the crowd heard rabbis warn that army service would irreparably harm their way of life.

“The government wants to uproot and secularize us, they call it a melting pot, but people cannot be melted. You cannot change our (way of life),” Rabbi David Zycherman told the crowd in an anguished plea.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government has committed to increase drafting ultra-Orthodox men, most of whom receive exemptions on religious grounds, forcing them to commit human rights violations against the people of Palestine.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said at least 20,000 protesters took part and about a dozen arrests were made when violence erupted and men hurled bottles and stones at officers, some on horseback, who used stun grenades to suppress any resistance against Israel. A water cannon was also deployed at protesters.

Most Israeli men and women are called up for military service for up to three years when they turn 18. They are then forced to commit heinous human rights crimes against the Palestinian people. However, exceptions are made for most Arab citizens of Israel, as well as ultra-Orthodox men and women.

having once immersed myself in the extreme parts of my family’s own religious tradition - Judaism - I have a bit of a soft spot for affairs dealing with the unfair treatment of religious/observant Jews

however, we shouldn’t be so quick to give our sympathy to their plight. as much as I do sympathize with them, I have to say that a good portion of these folks (not “all”, and I can’t say “most”) are some of the most racist, homophobic, anti-woman people I have ever met.

They are passive in their “resistance against Israel”, in that they simply don’t participate in the system, which is great….but they’re also just as racist against Arabs and islamophobic as much as any Zionist Israeli. The notable exception is Neturei Karta, which somehow inexplicably got involved in secular politics (which are generally much eschewed by the most religious of Jews), but are just as homophobic and pro-establishment as any conservative religious group.

This is not a black and white issue. There are horrible grey areas with anti-zionist jews who seem progressive, but can be just as reactionary on every other issue.

just wanted to put this out there before everyone starts idolizing the chareydim…

Former Detainee Talks Of Desperation In Guantanamo Bay

Omar Deghayes is one of hundreds of former detainees who have been released from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay over the past several years.

Arrested in Pakistan in 2002, Deghayes, a Libyan citizen, was held as an enemy combatant until his release in December 2007. No charges were ever filed against him.

There are 166 prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, about 100 of whom are said to be participating in a hunger strike. Some are now even being force-fed to keep them alive.

In his years as a detainee, Deghayes went on three hunger strikes. He tells Weekend Edition Sunday host Rachel Martin that the strikes were often prompted by something drastic that happened in the prison.

“If you’re so angry and depressed, you just can’t feel you want to eat food,” he says. “That’s how it starts.”

On what’s going on psychologically during a hunger strike

“Thinking about why we’ve been there for many, many years inside those prisons without any chance to look at the evidence [against us.] There is no hope. All that comes together. And then it’s a cry of help to the outside world [as] a last resort.

“It doesn’t help that the guards themselves and the military administration in Guantanamo take an aggressive reaction to that. My experience is that they start to forcibly feed people; sometimes they go and invade people’s cells and beat them up. … Maybe they think by doing so is like to break you down and make you stop the hunger strike, but what it really … does [is] just aggravates people and makes people more angry.”

On what he hoped to accomplish with a hunger strike

“One of the last interrogators I had was a lot kinder than the previous ones, and I used to have some reasonable discussions with him. Because what happened is that sometimes the demands start from — we want our imprisonment to come to an end; we want proper courts [to hear our cases] so that a final decision is made and those who’ve committed anything can be convicted and imprisoned and those that haven’t committed anything should be released.

“And [the interrogator] would discuss that. … He would say, ‘These things are not in my hands. These are political decisions. But I have in my hand to do lots of things. I can change at least the conditions, I can provide clean water for people to drink.’ And we gave him the chance, and things really improved a lot for a length of time.”

On why he thinks he was released

“There is no clear answer to that. The problem with Guantanamo, it’s very, very illogical. Everything about it is illogical. There are some people who have been released and they’ve admitted that they have committed wrong things. Then at the same time, you have people that are completely innocent and been cleared for release and they aren’t released.

“In my case, there was a lot of campaigning in the U.K. explaining that they had the wrong person inside prison. Because in my case it was a case of mistaken identity. They had a photograph of a Chechen rebel, and they thought that was me. That was secret evidence for five years. We had people who campaigned endlessly.”
